DI graduation

DI graduation

I finished my Dietetic Internship — 11 months of free labor at the best hospitals, non-profits, and corporate agencies in New York City — done! The last place I interned, a PR agency, hired me back 5 days later as a freelance consultant. How fantastic is that? So, we had our graduation on Thursday. I played all day Thursday and Friday, and Monday I go to work! At the request of our Program Coordinator, I said a few words...

a most momentous week

a most momentous week

It has been a hell of a week. But in a good way. No, in an impossibly zenith-surpassing kind of way. In one week, I celebrated mother’s day and my dad’s 65th birthday (same day this year!), my mom’s 65th birthday 7 days later, fred’s birthday, which is (not coincidentally) also our anniversary, and my graduation. Aside from all the celebration, this past week (or really, the past 10 days) has been about spending time with my visiting parents,...

graduation 1

As usual, much has passed since I last posted. What’s to be done, there’s no going back; though I did have some very interesting thoughts on graham crackers I had wanted to write about. Oh well. So… tonight is my first of two master’s degree graduation ceremonies. I specify what kind of graduation it is so as not to confuse it with the Dietetic Internship graduation which will occur later in this July (woo). I’ll mention it now in...

dreaming in sushi

Dietetic Internship, Clinical module, Week 3: in progress Analysis of current diet book, 1 week on the diet: day 1 Forbidden food most commonly occuring in day dreams: sushi Me: so, so, tired. I need coffee. Also, I don’t like a book telling me what to eat, but I suppose it does the job of helping me appreciate what “dieters” go through (temporary insanity; reckless belief in unsubstantiated claims). One more thing:  Thesis v1.0 due: March 1st. wish me...

Clinical Module: Day 1

Today was the first day of the clinical module of my 11-month Dietetic Internship. I’m doing my clinical rotations at New York-Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia and Cornell (NYP for short), and today was the first day of a full orientation week sometimes known as ‘boot camp.’ Though, to me, it felt more like the first day of college. Most of the incoming interns in fact just graduated from college, and the majority of them still appeared to be ready...

A new year, a new job

Tomorrow is, not only my 27th birthday, but my first official day of an 11-month formalized internship called the Dietetic Internship (DI). I’m excited to be working with Healthy Schools Healthy Families (see more about them below). I’m even more excited that I get to put off hospital rounds until January. Woohoo! – “Healthy Schools Healthy Families” Targets Medically Underserved NYC Elementary School Students Made Possible Through $2.28 Million Grant from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services New...

Coffee or Tea?

I was in Shanghai for two days before it happened. I was visiting chic Xintiandi, a bit of old Shanghai architecture carefully preserved and reimagined as an entertainment plaza in the midst of modern developments. Aptly named, “New Heaven and Earth,” and complete with an original Shikumen-style home you can tour at your leisure, it boasts more charm than kitsch. So imagine my surprise when I turned a corner and was faced with a big fat Starbuck’s. Whether you...

Street Food

Today is the day I spent eating.   We started the day in Yuyuan Gardens and Bazaar, in old town Shanghai. If Shanghai is the birthplace of soup dumplings (and it is), then Yuyuan is home to the best soup dumpling house in all of Shanghai (it is, it is!). There is usually a line extending several hundred feet back from a window where you can get 16 small soup dumplings for 8 RMB (~$1). Alternatively, and this is...

Mindful of Food

There is a hypothesis that the omnivore’s dilemma – sorting through our myriad choices of foodstuffs – is one of the reason’s our (human) brains grew so large.   Some may now rejoice that our relatively large brain capacity can be filled with other things; then there are those of us who are still content to think about food all day long.   A few morsels from my day:   Organic ready-to-burst ripe strawberries from the farm just over...

EatWell

Same drill. Early morning sunshine woke me. Except this morning I had a mission. I had to get myself to the Castro for my first day as an intern at WellCall. For those not in the know, the Castro is SF’s expansive gay district where rainbow flags are more ubiquitous than happy homeless. It is also home to numerous eateries and shops I cannot afford, but appreciate.   The WellCall office is housed on the second floor of an...
